2020: Week 1
We made it through the first week of 2020. What have you accomplished?
I don’t usually set New Year’s resolutions; however, I do practice goal setting. I often set a few for the beginning of the year and update them as my priorities change.
A couple of my goals started on Jan. 1. In 2020, I want to read the NIV translation of the Bible chronologically and deepen my music theory knowledge.
To read the Bible through, I’m following Tara-Leigh Cobble’s The Bible Recap plan and listening to the short podcast episodes associated with each day’s reading. The episodes are super helpful for digging deeper into God’s Word. I chose the NIV version because I finished up a year in the ESV last August and want to diversify.
Next, I want to strengthen my music theory skills. To help with that, I enrolled in a music theory course through Coursera offered by The University of Edinburgh. Music theory is not all new to me; however, I want a refresher. It’s been a long time since piano lessons and high school band classes.
That’s just a couple of my 2020 goals. To keep me on track, I plan to list a handful of highlights, and, hopefully, I can look back on Dec. 31 and see how I’ve grown.
Here’s the first set.
- Eden didn’t last long. It took all of 62 verses for Adam and Eve to disobey God. But before we judge them, we should consider this: How quick are we to sin? How quick are we to repent?
- Job and I would be friends, but I don’t want to be like Job’s friends. I don’t want to squish God in a box like they did.
- God is sovereign. He is the Creator and the Almighty One. While He had every right to wash His hands of disobedient mankind, He offered redemption instead. It’s beautiful and humbling to realize that kind of love.
- I need to know more Scottish and Irish songs. Disney did not prepare me for “What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor?” and “She Moved Through the Fair.”
- Phrygian is a weird word. I think I’ll skip that mode and stick with Dorian or Lydian.
That’s all from me for now, but what about you? Did you set New Year’s resolutions, goals, or intents for the year? I’d love to hear about them!
